Today, November 1, 2016, the KDE project was proud to announce the release of KDE Plasma 5.8.3, the third maintenance update to the long-term supported KDE Plasma 5.8 desktop environment.

KDE Plasma 5.8.3 LTS arrives just two weeks after the second point release, namely KDE Plasma 5.8.2 LTS, which recently made its way into the software repositories of various rolling GNU/Linux distributions, including OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, and adds a total of 46 changes across various core components.

These include the KWin window manager, Plasma Discover package manager, Breeze icon theme, Plasma Addons, Plasma Desktop, Plasma Audio Volume Control, Plasma Workspace, as well as the Powerdevil power management daemon and User Manager, which no longer ask for root (system administration) permission when it is not the case.

The volume is now muted when decreasing it to zero

KDE Plasma 5.8.3 LTS comes with an updated Plasma Audio Volume Control component which now automatically mutes the volume when it's decreased to zero, and makes sure that the PowerDevil daemon will no longer crash during session logout. However, KWin and Discover received the most changes in this update.

Below, we've attached the full changelog for your reading pleasure. We strongly recommend that you install the KDE Plasma 5.8.3 LTS update on your GNU/Linux distribution as soon as it makes its way into the stable software repositories. It appears that Arch Linux users are, once again, the first to enjoy the KDE Plasma 5.8.3 LTS desktop.

Later this month, on November 22, we shall be able to get our hands on the fourth KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS maintenance update, versioned 5.8.4, and it looks like there will be one more such point release scheduled for 2016, KDE Plasma 5.8.5 LTS, due for release on December 27. The KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS desktop will be supported until April 2018.
