14 DAY TRIAL // See the screenshot on the right? That's how your KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment will look when you upgrade this summer to the KDE Plasma 5.10 release, which will enter development in early May.
KDE developer Eike Hein is announcing that the KDE Plasma 5.10 desktop environment will come with a brand-new look (sort of). According to the developer, the Folder View will be used by default for the upcoming release instead of that Desktop widget you're probably removing every time you reinstall your KDE-based distribution.
In January, we told you that the KDE devs are preparing a cool new functionality for the Folder View in the KDE Plasma 5.10 release, namely spring-loading. This lets users navigate folders just by hovering above them with the mouse cursor during a drag and drop operation when you want to copy or move files and folders.
"Given Plasma 5's incarnation of Folder View is about to be put front and center, we're putting a lot of effort into making it really shine throughout the 5.10 development cycle," reveals Eike Hein. "We've been thoroughly auditing for interaction issues, sorting through feedback and talking to people about how they use Folder View."
Users' feedback is always welcome
Right now, the KDE developers are working hard to polish the Folder View for the KDE Plasma 5.10 desktop environment, whose development will begin later this spring, with a Beta release out the door in early May. As expected, users' feedback is always welcome, so if you want to get an early look, go ahead and download the KDE Neon Developer Edition distro or any other OS that offers bleeding-edge KDE packages.
KDE Plasma 5.10 will launch at the end of May, on the 30th, and will be yet another standard release that will get a total of five maintenance updates, the last one, KDE Plasma 5.10.5, also marking the end of life of the upcoming desktop environment on August 22, 2017.
