KDE developer Albert Astals Cid announced the release date of the upcoming KDE Applications 17.04 open-source software suite for KDE Plasma desktop environments, along with the final release schedule.

We were just wondering when KDE Applications 17.04 would be released when the current KDE Applications 16.02 series received its second maintenance update, and we were right to believe at that point in time that the final release would come in April, and according to the release schedule, it looks like KDE Applications 17.04 is set to land on April 20, 2017.

However, development did not even start yet, and KDE developers are urged to hurry up to update their applications included in the software suite because the dependency freeze is set next month on the 16th, and Feature Freeze for March 23, when the Beta milestone is hitting the streets for early adopters and public beta testers.

"Applications in 17.04 can be based on kdelibs4 or KDE Frameworks 5 at maintainers decision, basically we will release whatever is in master of the repository. Please make sure all your dependencies or people that depend on you are aware of your decision to not cause problems," reads the official release schedule.

KDE Applications 17.04 will have three point releases

On April 6, public testers will also be able to test drive the Release Candidate (RC) version, and after the official launch of KDE Applications 17.04 on April 20, there will be three maintenance updates announced during a period of three months, the first of which, KDE Applications 17.04.1, is set to land on May 11, 2017.

While KDE Applications 17.04.2 is shipping on June 8 with more improvements for your favorite apps, the last maintenance update, KDE Applications 17.04.3, should arrive on July 13, marking the end of life for the software suite. KDE Applications 17.04 will be available for both KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS and KDE Plasma 5.9 desktop environments.
