Today, June 14, 2016, KDE has announced the general availability of the second point release for its KDE Applications 16.04 series of the software suite used for the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment.

KDE Applications 16.04.2 arrives on the same day as the last maintenance update for the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment series, versioned 5.6.5, bringing fixes for more than 25 recorded bugs that have been reported by users since for various KDE applications.

"Today KDE released the second stability update for KDE Applications 16.04. This release contains only bugfixes and translation updates, providing a safe and pleasant update for everyone," reads today's announcement. "You can find the full list of changes here."

According to the changelog, apps like Akonadi storage service, Ark archive manager, Artikulate pronunciation trainer, Dolphin file manager, Kdenlive video editor, KDE PIM collaboration suite have received various improvements, so they should work a little bit better now.

Best of all, the KDE Applications 16.04.2 maintenance release, which is a recommended update for every GNU/Linux user using the latest KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment, also includes the long-term supported KDE Development Platform 4.14.21.

KDE Applications 16.04.3 will be the last in the series

The development cycle of the KDE Applications 16.04 software suite for KDE Plasma 5.6 is over, but there will be one more maintenance update, KDE Applications 16.04.3, released on July 12, along with the KDE Plasma 5.7.1 desktop environment.

Yes, that's right, KDE Plasma 5.7 will be officially unveiled to GNU/Linux users on July 5, and a Beta version is available for public testing in only two days from today, on June 16.

Unfortunately, we don't know yet what will come after the KDE Applications 16.04 series reaches end of life on July 12, 2016, as the KDE developers are yet to reveal their plans for the next major KDE Applications release.
