Shortly after the nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were announced, rapper Nicki Minaj went off on Twitter saying that her music clips for “Anaconda” and “Feeling Myself” ft. Beyonce should have been nominated for Video of the Year.
She turned her anger into an argument of how black entertainers, and especially female ones, weren’t getting the recognition they deserved from the industry. Taylor Swift took that to mean she didn’t deserve a nod for her “Bad Blood” and called her out to admonish her that, as a woman, she shouldn’t be bringing other women down.
Katy Perry has injected herself into the feud, and she’s calling Taylor a big hypocrite. And she’s doing it with just one tweet, which you will find embedded below.
Katy has the floor, calls out Taylor Swift for being a hypocrite
You will also find the original tweets from Nicki and Taylor below. Notice that Nicki didn’t even mention Taylor by name until she jumped to find her comment offensive, and then the rapper said she too had nothing but love and respect for her and her work.
Nicki insisted that the whole argument she was trying to make was about how the industry and the media put black people down by not giving them the same recognition their white counterparts receive for similar achievements.
The thing is, Katy says, Taylor shouldn’t be the one to talk about the need for girls to support other girls, because she’s actually making money and, ironically enough, getting award nominations for doing just that.
Some context for the Taylor vs. Katy feud
A while back, these 2 were inseparable friends. Before Taylor’s “1989” album came out, Taylor said that the most aggressive song on it was “Bad Blood” (i.e. the one with the most nominations at the VMAs 2015), which was about a former female friend who had tried to backstab her professionally by hiring dancers from under her during an arena tour and thus nearly ruining it.
When the video for it came out, which features Selena Gomez in a wig and getup that makes her look eerily like Katy Perry, the rumor that the song was about Katy became a near-certainty.
In other words, “Bad Blood” is the Taylor Swift Katy-Perry-takedown-song. She is putting a female entertainer down publicly and capitalizing on it, but at the same time, she’s telling Nicki she shouldn’t do that to her because… feminism?
And that is what Katy meant by her tweet on the VMAs 2015 feud. Her second post on the topic is about how “the real travesty” about the VMAs is that Rihanna got no love for her controversial and very popular “Better Have My Money” music video.
Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman...

The real travesty is where is the shine for #BBHMMVideo when VMA eligibility period was 7/7/14-7/1/15 & that gem dropped 7/1... @MTV

Hey guys @MTV thank you for my nominations. πππ Did Feeling Myself miss the deadline or...?

If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. πππ
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn't go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween...an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination. ππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππ

Oh but trust me. I'll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda. ππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππ

I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX

Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want. https://t.co/AfcwoyDvpg

Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me. But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a "jab"?

I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.
