Beta patch already available, no word on stable fix

Despite the criticism it received in the United States and in the United Kingdom, Kaspersky continues to be one of the leading security vendors for Windows users across the world, with its software protecting millions of systems powered by Microsoft’s OS.

But it turns out that some of those whose computers were running the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and Kaspersky Internet Security 2018 have been hit by a bug causing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) since earlier this month.

BornCity reveals that the issue first appeared earlier this month when some users complained of a BSOD on Windows 10 build 16299.98, which indicates that these systems were running the latest version of the OS with cumulative update KB4051963.

Cumulative update not at fault this time

While in many cases cumulative updates are to blame for errors like this, it doesn’t appear to be the issue here, as some said that a similar problem is experienced on Windows 7 SP1.

After further investigation, it looks like the BSOD is caused by classpnp.sys and klbackupdisk.sys (Kaspersky Labs volume filter driver), with the error more often triggered when running browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. There’s no pattern here to reproduce the bug, and the BSOD shows up at random times for no clear reason.

While neither Microsoft nor Kaspersky released a statement on the bug to acknowledge it, a beta patch already seems to be available, though it requires to be manually installed by those who want to give it a try. This isn’t obviously the most convenient method to fix a critical workaround, but having a beta patch is an indication that Kaspersky is looking into fixing this problem in the near future.

Even though there’s no word on when the patch could be released, it looks like the version you should be looking for is 18.0.0.405(e), as it’ll be the first one to include the patch and fix the BSOD issue.
