14 DAY TRIAL // KDE oriented KaOS GNU/Linux distribution, a build from scratch rolling and transparent Linux-based operating system for the modern PCs, received the November 2017 updated ISO snapshot.
Almost every month, KaOS developers release an updated installation medium that contains all the latest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source applications. The KaOS 2017.11 ISO snapshot comes the recently released KDE Plasma 5.11.3 desktop environment, as well as both KDE Applications 17.08.3 and KDE Frameworks 5.40.0 software stacks, all compiled against the Qt 5.9.2 application framework.
"KaOS repositories no longer provide Qt 4," said the devs in the release announcement. "Any application that has not made the transition to Qt 5 in all this time can no longer be supported in KaOS. Either they actually are no longer maintained or their development is ignoring the implications of building on a possible insecure toolkit."
Under the hood, KaOS 2017.11 is powered by the latest and greatest Linux 4.13.12 kernel, systemd 235 init system, Mesa 17.2.5 graphics stack with experimental patches for the Nouveau open-source video driver for Nvidia GPUs to allow the use of QtWebengine-based apps on the distribution, as well as Perl 5.26, PHP 7.0.25, Poppler 0.61.1, D-Bus 1.12.2, OpenCV 3.3.1, Porotobuf 3.4.0, and Texlive 2017.
Introducing Elisa as the default music player
With this release, KaOS developers introduce Elisa as the default music player for new installations. The Elisa music player was chosen by the community during a poll and it replaces the Babe media player used in previous versions of the OS. However, it looks like KaOS also offers KDE's Juk music player in its repositories, which was recently ported to the KDE Frameworks 5 technologies.
KaOS uses the Calamares universal installer framework as default graphical installer, and the KaOS 2017.11 snapshot uses the latest Calamares 3.1.7 maintenance release.
