Today, April 20, 2016, the developers of the KaOS Linux operating system have announced the release of the KaOS 2016.04 in celebration of three years of activity.

KaOS is a rolling GNU/Linux distribution in the style of Arch Linux or OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, which means that the new, monthly ISO releases are here only for those who want to deploy the operating system on new computers or reinstall their machines and don't want to download a bunch of updates from the repositories.

Therefore, KaOS 2016.04 is here to bring you all the software updates and security patches that have been released during the month of April 2016, among which we can mention KDE Plasma 5.6.2 desktop environment with the KDE Applications 16.04.0 software suite and Qt 5.6 GUI toolkit.

"Not the customary bi-monthly release this time, but celebrating the three-year anniversary of KaOS by releasing 2016.04," the developers have explained in today's official release announcement for KaOS 2016.04. "Reason for this earlier release is the move to Qt 5.6 and with that an update and/or rebuild of the complete Desktop."

What else is new in the KaOS 2016.04 release

Among the most important updated packages included in today's KaOS 2016.04 release, we can mention KDE Frameworks 5.21.0, X.Org Server 1.18.3, Mesa 11.2.0, PulseAudio 8.0, ALSA 1.1.1, GStreamer 1.8.0, Boost 1.60.0, ICU 57.1, MariaDB 10.1.12, Libarchive 3.2 RC, and Linux kernel 4.4.5 LTS.

Qupzilla 2.0 is the default web browser using QtWebengine, the Fatrat open-source download manager for Linux will now be part of KaOS default installs, and Cantata is now the default music manager. As expected, the Calamares graphical installer framework has been updated to version 2.2.1.

You can download the KaOS 2016.04 Live ISO image right now via our website. Please note that it can only be installed on 64-bit computers. Again, if you're using KaOS Linux you don't need to download anything, just make sure your operating system is up to date, always.
