14 DAY TRIAL // The developers of the independently developed KaOS GNU/Linux distribution were proud to announce today the release and general availability of the KaOS 2017.04 ISO snapshot for the month of April 2017.
But it also happens that the KaOS project celebrates its fourth anniversary this monththis month. Therefore, on this occasion, they released a brand-new Plasma Wayland edition of the Linux-based operating system, along with the X11 standard flavor that was available for download until today.
"The Plasma Wayland version is a smaller ISO, ships with a more limited amount of applications than the regular Plasma version," reads the announcement. "At this stage, a Wayland session can only be run on free graphics drivers and the live mode (plus install) will automatically switch to a regular X-based Plasma session."
KaOS 2017.04 is now the newest snapshot of the GNU/Linux distribution, and it's also the first to ship with all the modules needed to automatically scale the operating system to desired monitor resolution when used under VirtualBox. However, it looks like the Plasma Wayland edition doesn't work on VirtualBox.
Installing with GPT on BIOS systems and manual partitioning now fully working
Among other novelties included in today's KaOS 2017.04 release, we can mention that installing the operating system with GPT on BIOS machines and manual partitioning now works out-of-the-box thanks to the latest improvements of the Calamares universal installer framework.
As expected, all the latest KDE technologies are also present in KaOS 2017.04, such as the KDE Plasma 5.9.4 desktop environment, the Release Candidate of the upcoming KDE Applications 17.04 software suite, the recently released KDE Frameworks 5.33.0, and Qt 5.8.0.
Under the hood, KaOS 2017.04 is powered by Linux kernel 4.10.9, Mesa 17.0.3 (with experimental Nouveau patches), X.Org Server 1.19.3, systemd 233, GCC 5.4.1, Python 3.6.1, Kmod 24, D-Bus 1.10.16, PyQt 5.8.2, Perl 5.24.1, Ruby 2.4.1, and Poppler 0.53.0.
