Redmond will cut free storage to 5 GB on Monday

Microsoft’s OneDrive storage cuts will come into effect on Monday, so users have only 1 day to claim their free storage and avoid getting their accounts downgraded from 15 GB to 5 GB.

Redmond announced in late 2015 that it would reduce the amount of free storage offered to existing and new OneDrive users and, at the same time, eliminate the unlimited storage option, after it discovered that a number of customers were using this space to save movies and DVR recordings in the cloud.

“A small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average. Instead of focusing on extreme backup scenarios, we want to remain focused on delivering high-value productivity and collaboration experiences that benefit the majority of OneDrive users,” the company said in its original announcement.

Claim the 15 GB as soon as possible

But after public backlash, Microsoft decided to actually give loyal users the chance to keep their 15 GB of storage space as long as they claimed it on a dedicated link.

This offer is only valid until January 31, so this means that you have approximately one day left to claim the 15 GB of free storage. Otherwise, your account could be downgraded to 5 GB as soon as Monday.

“If you also have the 15 GB camera roll bonus, you’ll be able to keep that as well. From now until the end of January, you can sign up to keep your storage at the link,” Microsoft explained.

If you’re yet to claim your storage, go here and do it as soon as possible. It only takes a couple of second to authenticate with your Microsoft account credentials and then you’re good to go.

Thanks for the tip, Matthias!
