Jonathan Riddell is no longer a member of the Kubuntu Community Council and the situation created by the Ubuntu Community Council, and the Kubuntu developers seems to have ended peacefully.

A strange situation presented itself a couple of months back when the Ubuntu Community Council requested Jonathan Riddell to step down from his role of the Kubuntu project. It was a complicated discussion that started a while back, and that resulted in this one of a kind request from the council. Jonathan Riddell explained that he had no official role in the Kubuntu project, especially not as a leader. In any case, it wasn't a good day for the Ubuntu and Kubuntu projects.

As it turns out, Jonathan Riddell is a member of the Kubuntu Council, so he had to renounce his membership. The situation seems to have been resolved for now, although the problems that have led to all the discussions are still opened for debate.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu are at peace once more

It's likely that some of the friction between the two councils will remain, but for now things have been settled. Developers can focus now on the Kubuntu and Ubuntu systems respectively.

"After much public controversy, the Ubuntu Community Council and Kubuntu Council have met with Mark Shuttleworth and Jonathan Riddell to chart a path forward. Jonathan Riddell has removed his membership in ~kubuntu-council as the Community Council required, and the Fridge post has been removed as the Kubuntu Council requested. Provisions are being made to better handle cases where there is a potential conflict of interest for a member of the CC," noted Laura Czajkowski from the Ubuntu Community Council.

Some provisions have been put in place so that this sort of thing won't happen again. Such disagreements and the lack of mechanisms that can solve these problems will only weaken the projects. In any case, Jonathan Riddell will continue in his role of Kubuntu developer, so things are not that dire.
