It looks like Jolla's adventure in the smartphone business is about to end as the Finnish company is reportedly in deep financial difficulties.

According to Finnish newspaper Aamulethti, multiple sources within Jolla are claiming that the board of directors is now discussing the possibility of laying off some of its staff.

Currently, Jolla has around 100 employees, but more than a half of them might be laid off in next couple of days. The information has been confirmed by Jolla's Communications Director Juhani Lassila.

Those who have already pre-ordered Jolla tablets and have yet to receive them should rest easy as Jolla's officials confirmed that the company would fulfill all orders despite the financial difficulties.

According to Lassila, key personnel won't be laid off and changes in the company's economic situation will be announced very soon.

Key people will remain on staff

We expect an official statement to go live in the next couple of days, but for now take this as a possible scenario since it's been confirmed by one of the company's officials.

We will know more about the extent of the layoffs when Jolla comes forward with an official announcement, so until then the only number we have right now is “more than half.”

Unfortunately, Jolla's fail will be a signal for other start-ups that breakthroughs in the smartphone business are very hard to achieve.

The only way to compete with the giant companies with so much experience on the market is to cut prices on products without jeopardizing the quality too much.

It looks like, for some reasons, Jolla did not manage to secure enough of a budget to sustain itself in the long run. It's a pretty sad day for Jolla and Nokia fans alike, but let's hope they'll be able to turn it around and make a comeback next year.
