Just recently, Jessica Alba’s environmentally friendly Honest Company was estimated at $1 billion (€911.9 million), which means she has been successful in her goal of delivering healthy, non-toxic products for the entire family to all those interested, and made a fortune in the process.

However, as far as efficiency of said products goes, it might be best if you stayed away from the sunscreen, especially on these hot summer days, according to many unhappy costumers.

Honest sunscreen doesn’t work, is rather gross

Over the past few days, the Honest sunscreen has been getting plenty of negative reviews, with many unhappy customers saying that applying it gave them serious sunburns, even though they applied it regularly and brought the version with a higher SPF.

You can see sample tweets below: all these people claim that they used the Honest sunscreen as per the instructions on the label, and even though they limited their exposure to the sun accordingly, they still ended up with painful burns.

The product’s Amazon page is also filled with complaints and photos of kids with severe burns, taken and posted there by parents who relied on Honest for protection against the harmful rays of the sun on vacation.

Others who write that this product works in terms of protection against the sun complain about its nasty smell or the fact that it’s greasy and / or leaves a white residue after application.

In short, it seems that a product that promised the best of both worlds (high SPF protection and non-toxic ingredients) may have fallen short of expectations.

The Honest Company responds, is working on it

All those who took their complaints to social media have already gotten replies from The Honest Company, with a rep answering to their tweets with an apology and an invitation to contact them by email so they can receive “help.”

Alba’s company has also issued a statement on what was promising to become a huge scandal, saying they’re looking into the situation. However, maybe we shouldn’t rush to conclusions based on this negative feedback yet.

“Our Sunscreen Lotion was tested, by an independent 3rd party, against the protocols prescribed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's (FDA) monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products,” the Company says. “The results showed that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80 minute water-resistant (FDA's highest rating), SPF 30 sunscreen lotion in accordance with FDA regulations when used as directed (Shake Well. Apply liberally and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying and at least every 2 hours).”

The statement also says that the number of complaints corresponds to less than 0.5% of all the sunscreen products sold so far.
