Amazon decides to pull its Windows Phone app

More new apps arrive on Windows phones these days, no matter if they run Windows Phone or Windows 10 Mobile, but this doesn’t stop other developers from pulling their support for the platform.

The latest to do it is Amazon, which is the maker of one of the most important mobile apps today for those who prefer to do all the shopping from their smartphones.

Amazon has millions of users on mobile devices, and it’s very clear that, without a dedicated solution on Windows phones, not only the platform itself has to lose a lot, but Amazon too. This is because a small number of those still loyal to Microsoft’s operating system might decide to shop elsewhere simply because they don’t have an alternative.

Truth be told, the easiest way to shop on Amazon using a Windows phone will be the browser, but we all know that having a dedicated app that lets you do the whole thing, while at the same time quickly accessing account details and everything else, comes a lot handier.

No longer showing up in search results since early June

Amazon’s official app for Windows phones stopped showing up in search results earlier this month, but users were still allowed to download it with a direct link.

The company, however, remained tight-lipped on any plan regarding the platform, but in a notification posted inside the app running on Windows phones, the company now states that “the Windows Phone app will be retired on July 25, 2016. Please visit our website.”

There’s no hint at a potential Windows 10 universal app even though that would really make sense, so Microsoft had better start talking to Amazon about a possible partnership in this regard.

For mobile shoppers on Windows phones, this is the second big hit they receive in just a few weeks, as PayPal has recently decided to pull its app from the platform too, telling users to access its official website instead whenever they want to access their accounts.
