OneDrive can now help detect Pokemon in your account

Everyone with a Windows Phone hopes to see Microsoft doing some sort of magic and convince Nintendo to bring Pokemon Go on Windows, but in the meantime, Redmond is working on updates that seem to make its services more appealing to Android and iOS users who can actually play the game.

An update released today for OneDrive makes it possible for the cloud-based storage service to detect Pokemon photos in your account, so you can easily find them no matter where they are located.

Here’s how it works. If your phone’s camera roll is configured to automatically upload all photos to the OneDrive account, and you take lots of screenshots with the Pokemon you capture, the service now allows you to search for monsters by simply writing their name. A simple search for Pokemon brings up all photos, but you can also look for a specific one with its name.

Other improvements

The update also brings some other new features that are more helpful for Windows users, including automatic albums, which are photos grouped together based on location and time. These albums are automatically generated if you enable the feature, and you can even get a special one on Monday morning for your weekend.

A new option called “on this day” shows you photos you’ve taken in the past while the improved search makes it possible to look for pictures even using emoji.

There are some goodies for Windows 10 users too, as the OneDrive team has improved support for the Photos app that comes pre-installed to make it easier to manage pictures in the cloud.

“We worked closely with the Windows team to improve the experience in the Windows 10 Photos app. Now, when you sign in to Windows 10 with your Microsoft account, all of your OneDrive photos show up - including albums that were created for you automatically by OneDrive! You can even upload local albums to OneDrive so that those albums roam with you and are available across all your devices,” the company says.

Today’s new updates are available right now in your OneDrive account and in desktop and mobile clients, so make sure you are running the latest version of the OneDrive app to get them all.
