14 DAY TRIAL // The new-generation iPhone is expected to launch in September and reports that reached the web in the last few months pointed to more or less significant changes planned for this device.
The majority of sources familiar with Apple’s plans, however, revealed that the company was only preparing small changes on the iPhone 7 and now there’s a new report that seems to confirm this.
The Wall Street Journal writes, citing people with knowledge of the matter, that Apple is only aiming for minor upgrades for the iPhone 7, so the device is very likely to come with the exact same dimensions as the current generation. The iPhone 7 will continue to be available in two versions with a 4.7- and 5.5-inch screen, so no, there’s no Pro model in the pipeline as some leaks have suggested.
The report also reveals that the biggest change coming on the iPhone 7 is the removal of the audio jack, as Apple plans to bet big on the Lightning connector and thus use it not only for charging, but also for headphones. Information that reached the web today indicated that Apple could be offering a jack to Lightning adapter in order to allow customers use their EarPods or headphones with the new iPhone.
No dual camera on the iPhone 7 Plus?!
The removal of the audio jack is said to allow Apple to make the iPhone 7 thinner than the current generation and analysts have indicated that the company could obtain approximately 1 millimeter from getting rid of this connector.
While this isn’t necessary a big achievement and the difference will be impossible to notice, the no-jack approach could also make the iPhone 7 “more water-resistant,” sources cited by the reports indicated. This doesn’t mean that the iPhone 7 will be waterproof, but only withstand rain or drops of water with reduced risks of damage.
The worst thing about this report is that the removal of the audio connector is touted as the biggest change coming on the iPhone 7 and the dual cameras expected to debut on the Plus model aren’t even mentioned. Previous sources suggested that a dual-camera setup could be offered on the iPhone 7 Plus, while the 4.7-inch model could only get a larger camera with just one lens.
Certainly, today’s news isn’t helping Apple in any way, especially because the company is struggling to bring the iPhone back to growth, after reporting the first decline since launch in the first quarter of the year. The iPhone 7 is projected to launch in September, so expect more information to emerge in the remaining months.
