Test shows the iPhone 7 Plus is actually charging faster

One of the highlights of the new iPhone 8 is the addition of fast charging, a feature that has been around for a long time on Android devices, but which Apple is only now adding to its smartphones.

Even though the company hasn’t talked too much about the fast charging system on the new iPhones at the September 12 launch event, it’s pretty clear that this is a big deal for users, especially because iPhones take forever to charge.

And yet, a video posted on YouTube channel XEETECHCARE shows that there’s no reason to be excited about fast charging on the iPhone 8 Plus because this feature is actually… slower than the standard charging on the iPhone 7 Plus.

iPhone 8 Plus vs. iPhone 7 Plus

Basically, fast charging on the iPhone 8 can be enabled with the Apple 29W USB-C power adapter and the USB-C to Lightning cable, which not only that cost extra, but also appear to do the whole “magic” on the iPhone. In other words, it’s not necessarily the built-in hardware that allows the iPhone 8 to charge faster, but the power adapter itself that takes care of the process.

The video here is living proof. The iPhone 8 Plus with fast charging needed 2 hours and 10 minutes to charge fully using the adapter and the cable mentioned above, while the iPhone 7 Plus, without fast charging but with the same equipment, completed the process in just 1 hour and 59 minutes.

This means the iPhone 7 Plus is actually recharging faster than the iPhone 8 Plus, despite having a bigger battery: 2900 mAh versus 2691 mAh.

So, is there a fast charging system on the iPhone 8 Plus? There is, but Apple clearly has a different meaning for the word “fast.” For what it’s worth, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus recharges fully with fast charging in 1 hour and 42 minutes despite its bigger 3500 mAh battery.
