Statistics offered by Kantar for the three months ending November 2017 indicate that Apple’s iPhone X was the top-selling smartphone in several key markets, though this didn’t help Cupertino stop Android from growing.

Specifically, iPhone X accounted for no less than 14.4% of the sales in the United Kingdom in November, helping Apple achieve the highest share in more than three years. Additionally, iPhone X also gained the first place in Japan with a share of 18.2%, followed by iPhone 8 at 17.2%.

Furthermore, the iPhone X also sold like hot cakes in urban China where it reached 6.0%, though the model was outsold by iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in the United States. Apple’s 2017 iPhones were the three best-selling models in the home market in November, with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 only sixth in the charts.

This didn’t stop Android from growing even more in the majority of markets. In the UK, for instance, Android posted a 5.5% increase to 56.1%, while overall in the EU5 region, it went up 2.6% to 75.1%.

Apple posts growth in China

In the United States, iOS fell 3.8% to 39.8%, with Android improved by 4% to reach no less than 59.4%. China was the only market where iOS performed better than Android, posting an increase of 4.6% versus a decrease of 4.6%, respectively.

“Apple is now back on form – the iPhone X was the top selling model in urban China in November, with a market share of 6.0%. Unlike in Europe and the US, where the vast majority of new early iPhone X sales came from existing Apple smartphone owners, in urban China there are significant numbers of Huawei, Xiaomi and Samsung customers switching to the new iPhone models, which they deem a cut above the rest,” Dominic Sunnebo, Global Director for Kantar, says.

iPhone X sales in November, however, were impacted by the constrained supply in every single market, so Apple is expected to post increases in the top markets starting with December when the company aligned production with demand.
