New rankings published by Consumer Reports and analyzing the performance of the camera put Apple’s iPhone X on the first spot, followed by two other iPhone models.

iPhone 8 is the runner-up, while iPhone 8 Plus comes third, according to CR data, with Samsung barely making it to the fourth place thanks to the Galaxy S8+. Two other iPhone models are next, namely iPhone 7 and 6s Plus (!), just ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Overall, iPhones account for six out of the top ten places, while Samsung makes the rankings with four different models. No other brands made the cut for the top 10.

The rankings, however, are questionable to say the least, first because they put the iPhone 6s Plus ahead of latest-generation models like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. Furthermore, other brands are not even included, such as Google and its very own Pixel 2, which has until now been considered one of the top smartphone cameras around.

Where’s the Google Pixel 2?

What it’s worth mentioning, however, is that the Samsung Galaxy S9 is not included in the charts since it’s not available for purchase just yet – preorders are under way, but the device will only ship in the coming weeks.

Both Samsung and Apple have invested aggressively in camera performance, and third-party tests have shown that their latest-generation models deliver industry-leading results.

Most recently, DxO tested Samsung’s newest model, the Galaxy S9, and called it the best smartphone camera on the market, as it managed to beat the Google Pixel 2 and the iPhone X, both of which were considered to offer nearly DSLR performance.

In this context, CR not including the Pixel 2 in its rankings is questionable to say the least, especially given that older models like the iPhone 6s Plus made the cut anyway.
