The blue shift is there and it’s perfectly normal

The Internet was flooded this fall with issues hitting the brand-new Google Pixel 2, and while some of them were based on actual facts that pointed to bugs which sooner or later would be fixed, others were used to point the finger at Google for not paying enough attention to device reliability.

The blue tint that the Pixel 2 experienced when being looked at from a sharp angle was described by many as a critical issue, and a number of customers have even returned their devices due to what they considered to be a hardware problem.

And while Google itself defended its phone and said it was all a feature and not a bug, it looks like the iPhone X is also “suffering” from a certain amount of blue tint even at a minor angle.

The screenshots you see here were made from a YouTube video highlighting the features of the iPhone X, and while not many people seem to talk about it, the device clearly has some sort of a blue shift at a certain angle.

In the case of the Pixel 2, it was believed the poorly-applied polarizer was at fault, but on the other hand, experts claimed this is something that OLED displays do and is not at all an issue – the iPhone X is the first iPhone making the switch from LCD to OLED, and the panels are manufactured by Samsung.

Google says it’s not a bug, Apple tight-lipped on the blue shift

Google itself denied reports pointing to a display issue, explaining in a statement in October that the blue tint of its screens is generated by the OLED display.

“The slight blue tint is inherent in the display hardware and only visible when you hold the screen at a sharp angle. All displays are susceptible to some level of color shift (e.g. red, yellow, blue) when viewing from off angles due to the pixel cavity design. Similar to our choice with a cooler white point, we went with what users tend to prefer and chose a design that shifts blue,” Seang Chau, VP of engineering at Google, said.

Apple hasn’t obviously said a single thing about the blue shift on the iPhone X and reviews barely mention it, but it goes without saying that this matter will be discussed a little bit more once Apple starts shipping the device to customers tomorrow. Because sooner or later, everyone will get to try out the iPhone X and every little issue will come to light.
