14 DAY TRIAL // No surprise here, but USA TODAY has compiled a top 5 chart that shows iPhones are the best-selling tech product of 2017 as Apple sold more than 223 million units this year worldwide.
Put together by GBH Insights analyst Daniel Ives for USA TODAY, the chart shows Apple is once again on top of things will 223 million iPhone units sold throughout 2017, up from 211 million iPhones sold in the previous year. But Apple is also in the fourth place on the chart with over 20 million Apple Watch devices sold in 2017.
On the second place, we find Samsung, which appears to have sold about 33 million Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 smartphones in 2017. And here's where some of you might get angry, as the chart compiled by Daniel Ives isn't fair to Samsung considering that Apple's iPhone sales include more than two models.
Apple will have an even bigger 2018, says Ives
According to Ives, Apple will have "an even bigger 2018," as it is rumored that the Cupertino-based company will unveil a new iPhone SE model in spring, followed by new iPhone flagships in the fall. "Out of the billion-plus consumer base of the iPhone, 350 million of them will upgrade next year," says Ives.
USA TODAY also talked with Moorhead Insights analyst Patrick Moorhead, who says that to boost sales in 2018, Apple will lower the prices on any iPhone model that doesn't have an edge-to-edge display, which, again, shouldn't be a surprise to many as Apple usually slashes the prices of older models each year.
The analyst also admitted that Samsung has a broader portfolio of Android-powered smartphones, which currently dominate the market, and sells more units overall. In 2017, Google's Linux-based Android mobile operating system owned 85% of the market share and Apple's iOS only 15% of it.
The top 5 best-selling tech products of 2017 published today by USA TODAY, which you can see below, also lists Amazon's Echo Dot connected speakers in the third place with 24 million units sold this year, as well as the Nintendo Switch video game console on the fifth place, with 15 million units sold throughout 2017.
