Nobody was injured, but the house suffered huge damages

Studies have shown that iPhones are the preferred smartphones for teenagers, but a 15-year-old girl from Morfa Bychan, near Porthmadog, north Wales, certainly thinks otherwise.

Her bedroom was burned down after the iPhone she owned was left on the night stand to charge during the night and caught fire. It appears that the iPhone exploded due to overheating, causing a huge fire that completely destroyed the bedroom.

The damages extend to other parts of the house as well, partially because of the water pumped by firefighters who struggled to stop the fire. Rooms downstairs have been flooded, and the family won’t be able to live in the house for the next six months.

Caitlin Rae Durant explains that her iPhone was charging with a genuine Apple charger, but there are no details right now regarding the iPhone model that caused the fire.

“Everything upstairs, my other daughter's room and the office has also been destroyed due to heat, smoke and water damage. Nothing can be saved,” Gemma, the mother of the girl, was quoted as saying.

“Downstairs has been flooded due to the volume of water that had to be pumped in to extinguish the fire, everything has suffered smoke damage. At the moment, we're waiting to see if the experts think some items downstairs can be saved.”

Apple tightlipped on the incident

It’s not yet clear if Apple is also investigating the case, but chances are that it does, especially because one of its devices are believed to have caused the fire. The family hasn’t said a single thing about contacting or being contacted by Apple and it’s not known if they’re seeking damages from the Cupertino-based firm or not.

“Although the fire was contained to one room the after effects are enormous, we may well have lost almost all of our possessions. The house will have to be ripped apart top to bottom, we will not be able to get back into our home for up to six months,” the mother explained.

Fire chiefs decided to post photos showing the aftermath of the fire in an effort to highlight the risks of leaving phones connected to a charger and unattended for a longer period of time.
