The screen freezes on the iPhone 8 Plus, users complain

The iPhone 8 Plus is allegedly suffering from a pretty critical bug that causes the display to become unresponsive due to a reason that’s yet to be determined.

While Apple hasn’t said a single thing about this potential issue, it appears to impact a significant number of devices judging from how many people posted in this Apple discussions thread. The topic has already received 324 votes for the “I have this question too” option, and several users confirmed in their posts that their iPhone 8 Plus experiences the same behavior.

Basically, the bug causes the screen to freeze on the iPhone 8 Plus at random times, with only some features of iOS still working. This means it’s unlikely to be a hardware issue, as the display isn’t dead, and it all returns to normal after a full reboot.

Updates didn’t make any difference

One user who started the thread on September 26 says the screen becomes unresponsive when tapping an app icon on the home screen, with Force Touch and gestures also not working.

“What is interesting is the fact that I can still access Control Center, Notifications, and put the screen to sleep with the power button, and use the volume buttons.  Even tapping functions in the Control Center works, like the flashlight, or toggling Bluetooth or Wi-fi, for example.  But you cannot open any apps from the home screen or swipe to other home screens,” the user posted.

Since the original post in the thread was published, Apple has already released a couple of iOS updates, but neither made any difference, with most iPhone 8 Plus owners hitting the issue claiming that the screen still freezes on random occasions.

While Apple remained tight-lipped on the bug, it appears that the Apple Store does replace the units brought in with this bug, though there are users who reveal that even exchange units are hitting the same problem after a while.

For the time being, it’s unclear what is causing the bug and how users could repair it without paying a visit to the Apple Store, with the forced reboot the only option right now when the screen becomes unresponsive.
