Apple managed to beat analyst estimates in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2017, partially thanks to the iPhone 8 whose sales surpassed those of its predecessor in the same period in 2016.

While many believed that the iPhone 7 was selling better than the iPhone 8 and there was little reason to upgrade because of the small difference between the two generations, Apple’s financial results prove otherwise, contributing to an overall revenue increase of 12 percent to $52.6 billion.

While Apple does not disclose how many iPhone units of each generation it sold, the company did reveal that total iPhone sales the last quarter reached 46.7 million, so not only that it managed to beat the 46 million forecast, but it also achieved an important growth over the 45.5 million sold units in the same period a year before.

This means that the iPhone 8 launch quarter was more successful than iPhone 7’s, despite all the rumors that buyers were holding onto their purchases to wait for the anniversary iPhone X.

iPad and Mac sales also increased

The iPhone wasn’t the only Apple product that performed really well the past quarter, with both the Mac and the iPad also recording growing sales. The iPad, for instance, reached 10.3 million sold units, up from 9.3 million units the year before, while Mac sales increased from 4.9 million to 5.4 million units.

CEO Tim Cook praised the performance of the new iPhone 8, predicting revenue between $84 billion and $87 billion for the next quarter thanks to the arrival of the iPhone X.

“With fantastic new products including iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 3, and Apple TV 4K joining our product lineup, we're looking forward to a great holiday season, and with the launch of iPhone X getting underway right now, we couldn't be more excited as we begin to deliver our vision for the future with this stunning device,” Cook said.

The iPhone X is going on sale across the world today, with prices to start at $999 for the base model with 64GB of storage space.
