The older model outselling the newer model

The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus are both alive and kicking, but it appears that sales of the new-generation device have so far been a little bit below expectations, not only because of the approaching launch of the iPhone X, but also because of the iPhone 7.

As weird as that might sound, the older iPhone model is selling better than the newer model, even though the iPhone 8 obviously brings several upgrades.

But according to a survey of sales in carrier stores whose findings were revealed by KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh, these changes aren’t really overwhelming for potential customers, and this is why many decide to go for the iPhone 7 and not for the more expensive iPhone 8.

Big price difference, minor feature upgrades

Furthermore, the price cut that the iPhone 7 comes with is one of the decisive factors, as this model can be purchased in the United States from $549, while the iPhone 8 costs at least $699. There are stores that sell the iPhone 7 for as low as $500, so the $200 difference in terms of pricing and the insignificant updates on the iPhone 8 make people want to stick with the older model.

The iPhone 8 comes with wireless and fast charging thanks to a glass body that replaces the metal used on the previous generation.

The analyst says another reason for iPhone buyers not being so interested in the iPhone 8 is the lack of promotion for the new generation. Apple appears to concentrate most of its resources on the iPhone X, which is the flagship model of this year’s lineup, landing as an anniversary device featuring an OLED display, facial recognition, and other exclusive features.

The iPhone X, however, already appears to be cannibalizing iPhone 8 sales, despite not even being on the market just yet. The pre-order program for this anniversary model is projected to begin on October 27, while the device is due to hit the shelves on November 3.
