New type of wireless charging planned by Apple

Rumor has it that Apple’s iPhone could at some point get wireless charging and it appears that the next generation launching in September might actually be the first model to get it.

According to multiple reports, Apple has started hiring new experts that could help the company introduce a new type of wireless charging on the iPhone. Although such a feature is not yet available on its devices, Apple has been quite interested in wireless charging in the last couple of years and the company has even hired more than a dozen employees that could help research in this regard.

And more recently, Apple appointed two experts that previously worked for uBeam on wireless charging and ultrasonic technology which might find a place on a future iPhone model.

Not much is known at this point, but it’s believed that Apple doesn’t want to go for the traditional form of wireless charging that’s currently available on Android devices (and even on Windows phones), but for a more advanced type that would allow for charging without a dedicated pad.

What Apple is trying to do is a wireless charging solution that would allow customers to continue using the iPhone and even move around with the device, as long as they remain in the proximity of the charger. Specifics are not yet available, but some people close to the matter said that Apple is aiming for a range of between 5 to 10 meters.

Other Apple devices could get it too

It goes without saying that such a wireless charging system would be rather slow, but Apple is not necessarily aiming for speed here. What it wants is a comfortable charging system that would help customers make sure that they leave their houses or offices with 100 percent battery without even plugging the device to the charger.

Furthermore, Apple is believed to be planning to bring the same technology on other devices too, including the MacBook, should it succeed on the iPhone. But for the moment, the company is still working on this option behind the closed doors, so while pundits claim that the iPhone 7 could be the first to get it, we hear that this is rather an unrealistic target.

More likely, wireless charging could debut on the 2017 iPhone, the same model that’s said to bring many more important upgrades, including an OLED screen instead of the LCD, plus a completely new look with no bezels and the Touch ID and FaceTime camera integrated into the display.

The iPhone 7 should be here in September, so more information will certainly surface in the coming months as we approach the grand debut.
