More under-the-hood iPhone upgrades revealed in leaks

The iPhone 7 received a thorough introduction last week during its official unveiling, but Apple hasn’t disclosed all technical specifications of the new models, leaving us wondering whether the leaks that reached the web in the past months were real or not.

And yet, another leak coming from Chinese TENAA provides us with a closer look at the batteries of the new iPhones, as both the standard model and the Plus received significant upgrades that should help them last at least as much as their predecessors.

iPhone battery upgrades

First and foremost, it’s the standard iPhone 7 with a 4.7-inch screen whose battery has a capacity of 1960 mAh, according to the aforementioned source. This is undoubtedly a welcome improvement over the 1715 mAh battery available on the iPhone 6s, and given the fact that it doesn’t come with the dual-camera system offered on the Plus, it should provide substantially better battery life than the model it replaces.

When compared to the Samsung Galaxy S7, though, which is often regarded as its direct competitor despite the bigger 5.1-inch screen, the iPhone 7 is far behind. The S7 features a 3000 mAh battery plus fast charging, an option that’s not offered on the iPhone.

Thanks to software optimizations implemented in iOS, though, the iPhone is expected to offer at least similar battery figures as the S7.

As far as the Plus is concerned, there are some contradictory reports here. While previous sources pointed to a battery of 3,000 mAh, TENAA claims that the 5.5-inch iPhone comes with 2,900 mAh, a 150 mAh upgrade over its predecessor. This should help cope with the dual-camera system and the extra juice it needs for photo processing, but it still keeps it far behind rival Samsung Galaxy Note 7 which launched with an (explosive) 3500 mAh battery.

These specifications are yet to be confirmed by Apple, but we’ll certainly hear more about it starting Friday when the first iPhones are scheduled to ship to customers.
