Report claims an iPhone 6s caught fire after charging

An iPhone 6s has allegedly caught fire after charging in an incident that reminds of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 that used to burst into flames when plugged in.

Before anything, it’s worth noting that this PA report only cites a “loyal reader” and the amount of information is still vague at this point, so take it with a pinch of salt. Photos that were published in the article indeed indicate that an iPhone caught fire, but we’re still awaiting a comment from Apple or more details on the incident.

According to this report, the iPhone 6s' owner left his phone plugged in, but it started emitting smoke only when it was disconnected from the charger. The iPhone then caught fire and the owner obviously dropped it to the ground to avoid any possible injuries.

As you can see in these pics, the fire clearly took place in the battery area, and it is most likely the cause of the incident, although it’s not exactly clear why it actually burst into flames.

Overheating is somewhat normal during charging, and most phones get a bit warm when plugged in, but unless there’s a hardware issue, fire should not occur.

The Apple recall

Apple has already started a recall of the iPhone 6s after discovering that some units came with defective batteries causing them to shut down prematurely. The company originally said that only models manufactured between September and October 2015 were affected, but it’s now believed that more units could actually come with the same battery.

On the other hand, Cupertino claimed this wasn’t a safety issue and although batteries were indeed defective, no fire should occur.

“Apple has determined that a very small number of iPhone 6s devices may unexpectedly shut down. This is not a safety issue and only affects devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 2015,” Apple said.

An investigation should probably be started soon, as Apple usually gets in touch with owners experiencing such incidents very fast, but it remains to be seen if any new details go public given Cupertino’s CIA-like secrecy.
