The IPFire 2.19 Core Update 103 Linux kernel-based firewall distribution has been released today, July 12, bringing web proxy improvements and the latest security patches and bug fixes.

Michael Tremer has had the pleasure of making the announcement for this new maintenance update of the IPFire 2.19 series for the open-source, platform-independent firewall powered by a Linux kernel. According to the release notes, it adds many improvements to the built-in web proxy support, which is now based on Squid 3.5.

"The web proxy squid has been updated to the 3.5 series and various improvements for stability and performance were made," says Michael Tremer. "On machines with slow harddisks or on installations with very large caches it was likely to happen that the cache index got corrupted when the proxy was shut down. This resulted in an unstable web proxy after the next start."

Moreover, the development team has managed to improve the shutdown routine, which will finally stop the corruption of the cache index. If, however, the cache index is corrupted, this will now be automatically detected and rebuilt during the next start. Best of all, after installing IPFire 2.19 Core Update 103 on your system(s), the corrupted cache indexes will be removed.

Updated add-ons, bug fixes

Other changes implemented in today's IPFire 2.19 Core Update 103 release are a fix for an issue with the "setup" command not displaying more than six network controllers, support for underscores in domain names, and an update to the timezone database. The latest software components are present as well, including Coreutils 8.25, cURL 7.48.0, Dnsmasq 2.76, wpa_supplicant 2.5, findutils 4.6.0, less 481, grep 2.24, procps 3.2.8, Ncurses 6.0, and sdparm 1.10.

Many of the add-ons have been updated as well in IPFire 2.19 Core Update 103. Among these, we can mention TOR 0.2.7.6, Midnight Commander 4.8.17, 7Zip 15.14.1, ClamAV 0.99.2, and hostapd 2.5. Last but not least, the NFS add-on has been implemented as a drop-in replacement for portmap with rpcbind.
