The long-distance battle between iOS and Android continues these days, although the latter is clearly dominating the mobile industry in a way that’s very likely to guarantee the leading spot for many months to come.

Statistics provided by Kantar for the three-month period ending August 2016 show that Android improved in every single market except for the United States, while iOS’ performance was full of ups and downs across the world.

In the EU5 region (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom), Android improved its sales share by 6 percent, reaching 78.1 percent, while iOS posted a 1.1 percent growth to 17.3 percent. The difference is quite huge, despite strong sales of the iPhone SE, as Kantar explains.

“In Great Britain, both Android and iOS continued to enjoy year-on-year gains, with the iPhone SE remaining the top smartphone sold in the region in the three months ending August 2016,” said Dominic Sunnebo, Business Unit Director for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Europe.

Strong performance in the UK

And truth be told, the unexpected performance of the iPhone SE in the United Kingdom led to a more substantial growth for iOS in the country. Apple’s mobile platform is now at 35.9 percent in the country, up 2.1 percent versus 2015, while Android posted an increase of 4.8 percent to 58.9 percent.

The United States is the only country where Android declined and iOS increased its share. Kantar data shows that Android went down 1.7 percent to 65.2 percent, while iOS actually improved by 2.5 percent to 30.9 percent.

The biggest drop recorded by iOS was in Australia, down 5.2 percent, while the most substantial increase took place in France where it improved 2.7 percent to 18.1 percent.

These figures do not include sales of the iPhone 7, as statistics concern data collected before the end of August, whereas the new iPhone model launched in early September. Bigger growth for iOS is expected in the next round of statistics.
