iOS 9 was officially released on September 16, 2015, and in the next two weeks, 47% of all iOS devices were upgraded to use Apple's latest iOS release.

As reported by Localytics, even though it managed to be installed on almost half of all iOS devices available on the market, iOS 9 did not manage to reach the speed of adoption iOS 7 received.

In the first two weeks after being launched, iOS 7 was already installed on 60% of all iOS devices, making it the iOS release that got adopted the fastest to date.

The difference in adoption rates between iOS 7 and iOS 9 is a logical consequence of the enormous visual separation between iOS 6 and iOS 7 when Apple introduced an entirely new user interface.

On the other hand, the iOS 9 release added few new features to the previous iOS 8, with the multitasking features and a boost in performance being the most significant additions.

Even though adopted at a much slower rate than iOS 7, the iOS 9 release beats iOS 8's 36% adoption rate

However, iOS 9 managed to surpass iOS 8's 36% two-week adoption rate, last year's large-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus being the most probable cause for the difference, more so than iOS 9's enhancements over iOS 8.

This is also supported by Localytics analysis that makes it clear that iOS 9 is the most popular iOS release for newer iPhone models, with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus iOS 9 adoption rate reaching 55% and 59% respectively.

On the other hand, the oldest compatible iPhone device only reached an adoption rate of 30%, most probably due to the difference in performance when running Apple's latest iOS release.

To gather the information used to obtain the results detailed above, Localytics collected data from 50 million iOS devices using their marketing platform, while examining "all devices eligible for an OS upgrade, excluding iPhones that automatically included the new OS version on the device."
