Jailbreaks are more or less a thing of the past, as despite making the rounds several times in the last few months, the majority of jailbreaks for recent iOS versions never reached the web, leaving users with no option to unlock their iPhones.

But now there’s hope for a new jailbreak, as Liang Chen of Tencent Keen Lab demonstrated an iOS 11.1.1 jailbreak on the iPhone X, sadly without providing any information on whether a public release is planned or not.

The demo was provided to attendees of the POC 2017 security conference in South Korea, and since it was offered for research purposes, there’s a good chance details won’t be shared with anyone else.

Judging from Chen’s earlier projects, which included a jailbreak for iOS 11 beta 2 and iOS 10.3.2 that never launch publicly, the newly-found iOS 11.1.1 unlock system could be kept private, though proving that it’s possible to jailbreak the latest iOS version could be reason enough for other teams like Pangu to start looking into similar loopholes.

Do you really need to jailbreak your iPhone?

The big question that comes up every time people discuss about an iOS jailbreak concerns the advantages that unlocking an iPhone could bring to users.

While security could be compromised for people who don’t know what they’re doing, tech-savvy users who jailbreak their iPhones discover a completely new life beyond Apple’s walled garden, claiming that as long as you stay away from shady sources, there’s no need to worry about having your device compromised.

Furthermore, one of the advantages of having an iPhone jailbroken is the support of skilled developers and researchers for fixing security vulnerabilities, and it happened several times for iOS issues to be fixed faster by third parties than by Apple on locked versions of its mobile operating system.

For the time being, however, a new jailbreak for the latest versions of iOS is still uncertain, and it remains to be seen if any public releases take place.
