Today, January 4, 2016, the Inkscape project proudly announced the release and general availability of the new Inkscape 0.92 stable version of the open-source, free, and multiplatform vector graphics drawing application.

Coming eleven months after the release of InkScape 0.91, the new version promises exciting new features like mesh gradients, better CSS3 and SVG2 support, a much improved Pencil tool that now features interactive smoothing, brand-new path effects, as well as support for directly managing all drawing elements via a new Object dialog.

"Mesh gradients are a powerful tool enabling artists to more easily create photo-realistic drawings - a feature we would love to see made part of the W3C's Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard; if you find this feature as cool as we do, please request that your favorite web browser adopts support for it too," reads today's announcement.

Inkscape to switch to CMake as default build system

The new live path effects implemented in Inkscape 0.92 appear to also provide artists with a bunch of new drawing modes. These include Roughen, BSpline, Spiro Live, and Simplify LPE, the latter being designed to non-destructively clean up vector elements by smoothing paths, masks, shapes, clips, and even groups.

In the same manner, the Lattice Deformation 2 and Perspective/Envelope effects will let you interactively transform and deform drawing elements. As Inkscape 0.92 gained many CSS improvements, it would appear that the default resolution was changed from 90dpi to 96dpi.

Other notable changes include interactive mirroring and rotation of copies along a circle or arc, the ability to detect files created with older versions of Inkscape and offer users to automatically convert them, switch to the C++11 standard, move from GTK+ 2 to GTK+ 3, and adoption of Git instead of Bazaar for development purposes.

We recommend that you watch the video below to see all the new features of Inkspace 0.92 in action, and download the binary and source packages for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now via our web portal. Inkspace 0.92 should be available shortly in the repos of various popular Linux distros.
