2014 Jeep Cherokee deemed the most hackable car

A study by PT&C|LWG, a digital forensics consulting firm, shows which are the five most hackable cars available on the road today, along with four other cars that they found to be extremely difficult to breach.

Using information from recent security disclosures and white hat research, PT&C|LWG was able to assemble a top 5 of the most vulnerable cars, and they are as follows: 2014 Jeep Cherokee, 2014 Infiniti Q50, 2015 Cadillac Escalade, 2014/2010 Toyota Prius, and the 2014 Ford Fusion.

On the other side of the spectrum, they found that the 2014 Audi A8, 2014 Dodge Viper, 2014 Honda Accord, and the Tesla Model S are extremely hard to hack into.

According to PT&C|LWG researchers, a significant role in deciding which of these cars were vulnerable was played by the number of computerized car components that were interconnected, and then opened to external agents via WiFi or radio networks.

The cars that scored as least hackable had not only a small number of computers for various internal systems, but these computers were also isolated from one another and kept away from open points of compromise like USB ports, WiFi and radio systems.

If you've been following recent car hacking news, it should not surprise you that the 2014 Jeep Cherokee was deemed the most hackable car, since the company issued a recall for over 1.4 million cars after a security researcher took the car's computers apart and managed to remotely take full control of various car features like its dashboard, steering, transmission, and brakes.
