Clarence Siew was very proud Softpedia earlier today, July 4, about the immediate availability for download of the final version of his illume OS 3 distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux.

Dubbed Phobos, illume OS 3 is here to improved the overall security and stability of the system, to simplify processes system-wide, as well as to provide users with an improved, more polished interface. The new release is based on the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 (Jessie) operating system.

Compared with the last stable release of the distribution, illume OS 2.1.2, the new version brings faster performance by adding the readahead and preload technologies to the boot system, greatly reduces system footprint so you can run in on virtually any computer that supports the 64-bit instruction set architecture.

"This release has taken it a step further with the inclusion of various new performance boosting features and security features. Despite Linux being a relatively safe platform, the hardening of illume OS ensures that all your personal data is kept out of the hands of data thieves and phishing software," reads the announcement.

As mentioned, illume OS 3 boasts a more polished user interface, which includes a new GTK+ theme that supports the latest GTK+ 3.0 technologies, better font smoothing, a brand-new set of wallpapers, improved interface switcher, support for multiple user accounts, as well as a redesigned Help app.

Moreover, the Launch menu has been replaced with LXDE's LXPanel menu, basic compositing has been enabled by default, confirmation prompts have been implemented for both reboot and shutdown processes, the Software Catalog was removed, and there's now support for syncing your Android devices.
