14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is believed to be working on a new mobile device, though it’s not clear if this is a smartphone or not, and patents that have surfaced lately appear to indicate that something is indeed coming on this front from the Redmond-based software giant.
A bunch of drawings included in these patents provided us with an early look at what many hope to be the eagerly-anticipated Surface Phone, and now skilled designed David Breyer has created a bunch of renders that envision this upcoming device.
The renders were created using information that was originally included in all these patents and rely on the design language that was used by Microsoft on members of the Surface family.
Naturally, the envisioned device is pictured in typical Microsoft Surface colors like burgundy and cobalt blue, and it comes with a new form factor that relies on two separate foldable screens and one very innovative hinge.
Surface Pen support
This mix helps the alleged Surface Phone convert from tablet to laptop and note-taking device, using the two displays to create one seamless screen when flat. The concept imagines a clean look with just one USB Type-C connector and no physical buttons other than the volume controllers and the lock button, but with a small edge display a la Samsung Galaxy S8 to display notifications and other essential info.
There’s obviously Surface Pen support for the note-taking thing, and this is something to be expected, especially since the device is believed to be developed by the same team who designed the Surface, with Panos Panay in charge of the project.
It goes without saying that these are just renders based on patent information, and such information should by no means serve as confirmation this is exactly what the device is going to look like. Instead, Microsoft would really do itself a favor to check out these ideas, as they could help build a product that can crush competitors, including Apple’s somewhat controversial iPhone X.
