id Software, the developer which is now part of the Bethesda Softworks family, is getting ready to launch its RAGE first-person shooter this fall, but it seems that the team working there was working on something else using their new id Tech 5 engine before getting the idea for their current project.

Matt Hoper, who is the design director working at id Software, has told GameSpot that, “We actually started on an entirely different project and we kinda switched gears when we realized we had an opportunity here.”

He added, “Brand new technology, brand new IP with RAGE. Really, it’s an excuse to do all these cool things we’ve always wanted to do that maybe didn’t fit in DOOM, Quake or some of our other franchise worlds.”

His statements suggest that id Tech 5 was initially used in order to create a sequel to one of the more prominent franchises that the company owns, although Hoper would not identify it

RAGE is the first new intellectual property to come from id Software for quite some time and it represents a gamble for the developer and for Bethesda, as the publisher.

The game will take place in a post apocalyptic world where mutants and a secretive central power are the main threats and the players will have to use a varied arsenal of weapons and his tactical thinking to fight both.

The game is also set to include vehicle sections, also focused on the shooting aspect, which will also power the multiplayer.

Hoper says that the team has been lately thinking about offering some in-game unlocks for those who use the iOS version of RAGE but have not settled on a final plan.

RAGE is set to be launched during the first week of October and will arrive on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC.
