Apple plans to use flexible OLED screens from RiTDisplay, LG

An interesting tidbit from Seoul-based HMC Investment Securities’ analyst Kim Young-woo indicates that Apple’s rumored iWatch product is ready, but there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out.

Expected to launch this year (by some analysts), the iWatch is an unconfirmed wearable computer that looks much like a watch but packs a ton of sensors and advanced software to give the user a bird’s eye view of everything important in their life.

To create the device, Apple reportedly experimented with various form factors and seems to have ended up with a curved screen which it will source from RiTDisplay and LG Display.

A source speaking on condition of anonymity tells The Korea Herald, “LG Display has been in talks over flexible organic light-emitting diode panels for quite a while and it looks like it will be sealing the deal with Apple.”

Seoul-based HMC Investment Securities’ analyst Kim Young-woo chimed in to tell the newspaper that “Instead of relying on one supplier for its iWatch, which will be unveiled next year, Apple will have two vendors to be safe.”

“The key provider will be RiTDisplay and LG Display will be the second. Japan Display might also be a candidate, but so far its capacity seems lacking,” added Kim.

Perhaps more interestingly, the analyst also told the paper that “Apple won’t be ready due to overheating issues that have yet to be remedied.”

As if this was a trivial aspect about the iWatch getting delayed, The South Korea Herald leaves it at that.

Editor’s note The HMC analyst could be onto something as overheating could pose a serious threat to the iWatch user. Imagine a scenario where the device gets too hot to hold on your wrist and the lock jams up.
