The fact that the iTunes service has managed to reach, after only one year from its launch, the 50 million downloads threshold is of great importance not only for Apple, but for the entire music industry.

Although the price for a song's download is not the same in all of the 17 European countries
where the service is available, iTunes had demonstrated just how important a well established distribution network can be.

Despite the initial concerns regarding iTunes' success in each of the 17 countries, given the cultural differences between them, Apple has managed to become the leader on each market, especially due to the impressive offer, of over 1 million songs.

The success of iTunes doesn't necessarily mean that the classical distribution networks will disappear, but just that they should reconsider their business model and rely more on the Internet in order to promote their products.

iTunes will probably need another 2 or 3 years in order to become the most important music distribution network, and it's interesting to see whether it will also tackle the distribution of video contents. We don't know what's going to happen to the iPod, but it's clear that iTunes is here to stay.
