As expected, Apple has rolled out the public version of iTunes 9.2 for both Mac owners and Windows PC users. Initially posted to the iPhone Dev Center as a beta for iOS developers, the software delivers support for iPhone 4 syncing, a function for organizing books and apps on a device’s home screen, faster back-up process and album artwork improvements.

On the Downloads area of its website, Apple posts the following description for the iTunes 9.2 update, which contains the exact same changes on both Mac OS X and Windows platforms, excluding the security fixes that apply only to users of a Windows PC.

About iTunes 9.2

- iTunes 9.2 comes with several new features and improvements, including: - Sync with iPhone 4 to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on-the-go; - Sync and read books with iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 and iBooks 1.1; - Organize and sync PDF documents as books. Read PDFs with iBooks 1.1 on iPad and any iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4; - Organize your apps on your iOS 4 home screens into folders using iTunes; - Faster back-ups while syncing an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4; - Album artwork improvements make artwork appear more quickly when exploring your library.

As noted above, the security content of iTunes 9.2 addresses Windows-specific vulnerabilities. Apple details these in a separate knowledge base article on the Support area of its website. Softpedia will also be discussing these fixes in a separate report today. iTunes 9.2 requires Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later on the Mac side, while Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras, Apple says. On the Windows front, Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, or 32-bit editions of Windows 7 are required. 64-bit editions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 are also supported.
