In releasing iTunes 11 to the public last week Apple made more than a few changes under the hood. One update that slipped unnoticed in the sea of enhancements is the new OS requirement on Macintosh computers.

While iTunes 11 still has pretty much the same requirements on Windows PCs, Mac users are now required to run the latest release of Apple’s Snow Leopard operating system – Mac OS X 10.6.8. Previously, iTunes 10 required Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Customers experiencing installation issues with iTunes 11 may want to check their OS version from Apple menu -> “About this Mac.”

Apple says users will also need some 400MB of available disk space, 512MB of minimum RAM (though more is always better), a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 1GB of RAM for 720p HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras.

To play video at 1080p HD, a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 2GB of RAM is required.

A monitor with 1280 x 800 or greater resolution is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras.
