A new type of gift cards may be required for the new feature

iTunes Gift Cards can now be redeemed without entering a single character with your keyboard. Simply flash it in front of your Mac’s camera and iTunes 11, with its special card-recognition software, will do all the legwork for you.

Discovered by customers using the new iTunes, the feature is as simple as it sounds. Simply grab a compatible iTunes Gift Card (the ones that have their code stamped inside a rectangle) and show it to your Mac’s camera.

As the screenshot above shows, iTunes determines that the gift card is indeed compatible and reads the code inside the box. The information is then processed and sent to the iTunes Store where you are free to redeem whatever the card was for.

Nice touch on behalf of Apple. The feature isn’t even mentioned in the changelog.
