The iOS version of Transmission, the popular BitTorrent client, is now available for iOS devices. Jailbroken users who wish to download torrents onto their iDevice can access the software at repo.insanelyi.com via Cydia, though Softpedia does not encourage such practices.

While the repository itself is questionable - in that it has been flagged by the community as being chock full of pirated works - it does offer the iTransmission application which seems to be legit.

BitTorrent clients themselves, however, are also questionable - that’s why Apple doesn’t approve them in the App Store; therefore, you have to be jailbroken to use one.

All you need to do is find your torrents by browsing the web, copy them, and paste them in iTransmission.

We trust you will only use this app to download files that are otherwise free, if you proceed with installing it.

There were already some solutions for downloading torrents onto the iPhone or iPad, but none seems to look as polished as iTransmission.

That’s not to say the app is stable. Far from it. During our tests on a jailbroken iPhone 4, we saw iTransmission crash at least a dozen times.

There’s another drawback.

While iTransmission does well to download stuff both over WiFi and cellular, the app will not show up in iTunes’ file sharing pane, like VLC does, for example.

In other words, you won’t be able to grab the downloaded files with ease.

Let aside that you still need a computer to make use of the files you’ve just downloaded with iTransmission, the user is actually required to install additional software on their Mac or PC so that they can browse their iPhone’s directories to get to the downloaded file.

A hassle, as I’m sure readers will agree, but if you’re keen on having a torrent tool on you at all times, iTransmission gets the job done. At least that much it can promise.

Transferring and using the resulted downloads is totally up to the user.
