Yesterday it was iPod touches with back cameras. Today, we are being greeted by leaked pictures of alleged next-generation iPod touch parts bearing clear evidence of Apple’s plans to include a front facing camera as well. The move would put the popular media player on track for FaceTime compatibility, enabling users to employ the player as a communications device.

FaceTime, introduced by Apple at its WWDC10 iOS-focused event, is a new standard for video calls. iPhone 4 is capable of using the new feature thanks to the addition of a front facing camera. The standard is open, according to Apple, who plans to allow other smartphone vendors to enable it for their customers so that iPhone 4 owners can video-chat with other device users. FaceTime uses Wi-Fi (for now) and currently allows only iPhone 4 unit holders to place video calls.

MacRumors claims that an iPhone parts supplier sent in the photos available to the left. The images are claimed to be the front LCD and bezel of the upcoming iPod touch. The site points out to the immediately visible front-sided hole that would house a front-facing, FaceTime camera. The part is clearly market as belonging to Apple, the site notes, showing the stamp in full resolution.

Fall is usually the time when Apple revamps its iPod line, and there is no one to say this year will be any different. Recent rumors indicate that iPod touch is getting cameras. There is also no indication that this is not the next (logical) step for Apple. If proven true, iPhone 4 owners will be able to video chat with iPod touch owners by winter, this year. However, since iPod touch is not a phone, owners of the device will most likely be using their email addresses to use FaceTime.
