Alesis, audio electronics manufacturer, has recently introduced the world's first professional handheld digital stereo recorder for iPod. ProTrack enables iPod owners to use their Apple portable players as stereo digital recording tools.

"ProTrack provides convenient, direct-to-iPod stereo digital recording to iPod in a portable, handheld form factor," the company claims. "ProTrack is ideal for capturing sound effects, recitals, jam sessions, speeches, interviews, rehearsals, performances, meetings, lectures, notes-to-self, or any other audio material directly to iPod."

Here's what you can expect from ProTrack when it will be available from pro audio dealers in Q3 2008:

- Integrated iPod design - Records to iPod (Classic or 5th Generation), or iPod nano (2nd or 3rd Generation) - Professional connectors: two combination XLR - 1/4-inch inputs, 1/8-inch stereo output - Supplies 48V phantom power to inputs when wall-powered - Records 16-Bit, 44.1kHz or 22kHz stereo - Two built-in condenser microphones for detailed recording - Built-in microphones in XY configuration for optimum stereo image - Switchable limiter ensures overload-free recordings even in unpredictable aural situations - AC power adapter included - Four AAA batteries provide up to five hours of operation

Best of all, you also get a tripod stand mount so you can have ideal recording conditions, just like a pro.

It is worth noting that if you aren't anywhere near an AC adapter and want to power up your ProTrack using four AAA batteries only 2G / 3G nanos, both the 5G iPod and the classic iPod are supported. The company claims that four AAA alkaline batteries can provide four to five hours of operation.

ProTrack integrates the iPod into the recorder using the included sleds to securely mount the device. Two high-quality condenser microphones are built-in, fixed in XY stereo configuration for high quality field recording, while two combination XLR - 1/4-inch inputs (for connection for external microphones and line sources) are available too. ProTrack also sports a Universal Dock for iPod as well as LED signal indicators, a limiter and volume controls.

The device is slated for release during Q3 2008. Alesis hasn't set / disclosed the price on its device just yet.
