A strange battle may start this summer

One of the questions asked even before Apple's iPhone and revealed by some people is about the battle that may start between the iPhone and iPod this summer, and I think that a brief look over this problem would be an interesting thing to do now. So... is it true that the iPhone will kill the iPod?

Since I am not a visionary, it's obvious that only time will tell what is going to happen, but we can try to take a look into the future, and Gartner research group offered some information to help us with this task. According to them, the iPhone could eat a big slice of the iPod's pie, since some consumers would use a multi-function device like the iPhone rather than the dedicated iPods available at this time.

While this is partially true, I can't stop wondering about the battery life of your iPhone when used as a media player all the time - the answer to this problem is available on Apple's website, in the Technical Specifications page from the iPhone area, and to me it doesn't sound really good at this time. It's like using your Lamborghini to go off road just for the sake of it, when a highway is also available (I know they did this in the movies a few times, but if you have such a car, please don't go offroad with it!) - possible, but not really practical...

"The announced prices limit the iPhone's initial appeal to early adopters looking to extend their media libraries to a device with internet and phone capabilities", says the report from Gartner, but they are also predicting that the iPhone may become the "premier device" used to access mobile digital content, and media companies should start working from now on to optimize their media content for this platform.

As I said in the beginning, time shall tell, and until June I am sure we'll have a really wide web of possible consequences that may follow the iPhone's release to the public, so stay tuned for more details and be sure I'll let you know about every worthy rumor that pops up!
