Create a wallpaper by combining one of your pictures with a dynamic generated blur

iOS developer Erwin Zwart is offering Lockscreen Wallpaper Designer, a $0.99 / €0.89 app that enables you to design your own custom wallpapers for iPhone and iPad. It lets you put the photo subject front and center in a medallion and blur out the rest, making for one cool wallpaper machine.

Lockscreen Wallpaper Designer may look like your average wallpaper app, but actually it’s not. Unlike traditional wallpaper solutions, this one doesn’t just gather existing images from Google or wallpaper aggregators. Instead, it gives you the tools to make your own awesome wallpapers with a specific focus on the iPhone’s lockscreen.

“With iOS7 it can be hard to find a suitable wallpaper for your lockscreen, because your pictures are zoomed due to the parallax effect and the current time and date can be hard to read,” says Zwart. That’s true for some images, but when you go and select one of your own photos, that’s when things really start to get messed up.

Case in point, Lockscreen Wallpaper Designer puts you in charge of the wallpaper creation process, allowing you to apply a blur around the subject, as highlighted in the above screenshots.

Zwart explains: “Lockscreen Wallpaper Designer solves these problems by creating a wallpaper by combining one of your pictures with a dynamic generated blur containing the colours of the chosen picture.”

The blur not only allows you to make out the date and time much easier, it also uses the same color palette found in your original image, meaning any photo you pick will look brilliant.

“With only a few simple actions, the result is a clean and readable lockscreen, even with the parallax effect enabled,” Zwart promises.

It’s localized in English and Dutch (who knew people in the Netherlands are wallpaper crazed?) and it’s designed specifically for iOS 7 use, meaning you can’t get this one for older firmware (like iOS 6 and iOS 5).

As far as hardware compatibility is concerned, naturally you’ll only be able to download Lockscreen Wallpaper Designer on devices that support Apple’s latest mobile OS. That is: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad second generation, iPad third generation, iPad fourth generation, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, and iPod touch fifth generation.

Be sure to drop Zwart a nice review if you like what he’s offering. So far he’s got none, so you could be the first to lift his spirit.
