The iPhone Dev team has done the 'unthinkable'

Rumor has it that iPhone software 2.0 has already been unlocked. With the software already out (prior to its official release), Slash Gear claims that "the iPhone Dev team has had it for a little while now, and just announced that they have done the unthinkable, and created an unlocking tool for the software before it has even been released."

The jailbreaking tool isn't out yet, the website notes, but it is expected to launch very soon. The hack is said to offer iPhone 2.0 users the ability to choose whatever carrier and plan they want. The tech-based site promises to let everyone know when it's made available, as do we, even though Softpedia doesn't encourage iPhone users to jailbreak their devices.

As for ZiPhone, the free, open source and all-in-one jailbreak / unlocking tool for iPhone and iPod Touch, the latest version of the software was said to support the new 2.0 iPhone OS and more international networks. The feat was reported last month. Some have given it a spin, following the unofficial release of the iPhone software 2.0, and can now confirm that it isn't a go just yet: "In case you were wondering, we gave it a shot," 9to5mac says. "Updated the iPhone to 2.0, ran ZiPhone, and it crashed. Then we downgraded to 1.4. Crash again.... holding pattern."

ZiPhone is basically a do-it-all, unlock, jailbreak, and activate tool for iPhone owners. iPhone users have the option to not unlock their iPhones if they so wish, but jailbreak and activate only.

Zibri, the developer of the ZiPhone unlocking tool, claimed last month that even a "caveman" could handle his latest version of ZiPhone, posting a funny video along with the announcement: "At the moment I'm waiting for 2.0 to be released and the 3G iPhone to be in my hands." Zibri added that, shortly after WWDC 2008, a new iTunes version would be available for download, a piece of information found within the unreleased iPhone software 2.0.
