Xrec reportedly contains code from jailbreak app RecordMyScreen

A screen-recording application which uses code from a jailbreak tool has been approved in the App Store. xRec sells for $1.99 / €1.79 and comes with just enough issues that should ensure its imminent removal from the venue.

Granted, xRec is an awesome app. It enables you to record screen activity from your iPhone (including sound), but it reportedly uses jailbreak code and it already exhibits issues that make it a fairly unreliable application.

For example, the developer himself notes that it might not work properly in some cases, and that users need to perform certain gimmicks to access their recorded video.

The software seems to require a lot of tinkering to get the recording done, and it’s not supported by iOS 7 (meaning Apple’s upcoming mobile OS breaks compatibility with the jailbreak code).

Adding insult to injury, you need to be connected to the Internet in order to record screen activity, which sounds fishy. I wouldn’t want my movie to go flying off to some remote server where I can never reach it again to delete it.

Not to mention that developer Akın Öğünç says his app is supported in English, but the only screenshot available for xRec up on iTunes shows the interface is in Turkish or something. Well, as long as it supports English and Turkish, I guess it's not so bad.

Anyway, if you really need a tool like xRec, it’s still there for the taking at the time of writing (Apple will most likely take it down soon). Requirements include iOS 5 and any iDevice that can take the firmware.

Knock yourself out if you want, but do consider the warning signs impaled in the paragraphs above.
