Apple has released a new version of the iPhone SDK for developers, aiming to craft OS 3.0-compatible applications using Snow Leopard. According to the Cupertino-based company, iPhone SDK - Snow Leopard for iPhone OS 3.0 is a “developer preview of iPhone SDK for Snow Leopard” and provides support for developing applications for iPhone OS 3.0. Labeled “iphone_sdk_3.0__snow_leopard__final.dmg,” the installer includes only the SDK components for iPhone OS development, and requires that Xcode 3.2 already be installed on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Before downloading the new software, developers should note that this SDK-only install doesn’t work on Mac OS X Leopard or Xcode 3.1.x. Also noteworthy is that this SDK targets iPhone OS 3.0 applications and doesn’t include all 2.x SDKs.

Although the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK installer for Snow Leopard allows for a simple installation of the SDK, giving developers all the flexibility they need (no need to install content from individual packages), coders must be sure that Xcode 3.2 is already installed before installing iPhone OS 3.0 SDK.

Developers can choose specific Mac OS X SDKs to create applications that run on particular versions of Mac OS X, within Xcode. Alternately, they can use the iPhone SDK to build applications for the iPhone Simulator, the iPhone, or iPod touch, while the included tools allow them to upload their application to a device, and debug directly from the IDE. New in the latest version of the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK is:

- Organizer: the iPhone Development grouping now collects crash logs, install bundles, and provisioning profiles in a single location; - iPhone OS 3.0 Simulator uses frameworks more closely matching the device; - Mac OS X: GCC 4.2 & LLVM GCC 4.2 optional compilers for use with 10.5 SDK; - Toolbar uses a single pop-up to choose platform, target, and debug/release; - Integrated SCM support now works with Subversion 1.5.
